Ministerial engagements take place throughout Wales during the whole week (including evenings and weekends). The amount of travel varies between once a week to several times a week and can be at short notice. Occasional travel overseas may also be required. You will receive time off in lieu for evening and weekend work.
'Pan Wales' means that the location in which the vacancy can be based is flexible, subject to the needs of the business. Please note it may not always be possible to accommodate a preference for a specific office location, but requests will be taken into consideration.

Purpose of Post:

These posts involve providing protective security to Ministers and contributing to the wider remit of the Departmental Security Unit. You will work closely with Ministers and the police, provide general security advice to Welsh Government officials, and develop and maintain security policies. You will be required to attain National Security Vetting to SC. 

Key tasks:

  • Work with the police and external contacts for VIP events and engagements.
  • Prepare risk assessments – assess Ministers’ diaries, identify areas of potential risk to Ministerial engagements and evaluate relevant threat assessments (e.g. notifications from the police about planned protests).
  • Ensure that appropriate security arrangements are in place for public events attended by Ministers – this includes advance reconnaissance of venues and attending events.
  • Assist the Chief Security Officer to review Welsh Government security arrangements (e.g. inspections, security sweeps).
  • Attend security meetings with colleagues from UK Government departments and other Devolved Administrations as necessary.
  • Assist colleagues in the Departmental Security Unit and contribute to the wider remit of the Division (e.g. investigations, project work, inspections, presentations, responding to staff queries).

Essential

  1.  The ability to assess risks and provide a proportionate level of protective security at events and engagements.
  2.  The ability to provide updates and briefings to Ministers and Welsh Government officials on a range of security related topics.
  3.  The ability to respond to and deal with unforeseen events, including potential conflict.

Desirable

  1. Demonstrable experience in providing protective security/close protection at public events.

Assessment Process

Assessment Process

There are three stages to the Assessment Process:

1. Application Form

When completing the Application Form for this opportunity you will be asked to provide evidence (using real examples) of your knowledge, skills, experience and ability in the eight HEO Behaviours listed above (4 Competencies and 4 Job Specific Criteria). This is the most important part of your Application Form and will be assessed by a recruitment panel at the Sift Stage.

2. Sift Stage

The evidence you provide in your Application Form will be assessed by a recruitment panel. If you are successful at this stage, you will be invited to attend an online interview using Microsoft Teams.

If you are not successful at this stage, your application will not progress to interview and you will be notified of this outcome.

3. Online Interview

The online interview will take place over Microsoft Teams and will consist of two parts:

1. At the start of the interview, you will be given a scenario-based task. You will be asked to consider specific scenarios and, following some preparation time, you will explain your response to the recruitment panel.

2. You will then be asked questions exploring the competencies that you have been asked to evidence in your Application Form.
