£17,200 (pro rata for part-time)
We’re anticipating appointing up to 50 Apprentices over the next 12 months. The majority will take up post in October/November, while others may be appointed at later points during the 12 months.
18 months
37 hours per week. Applications from those wishing to work part-time are welcome, but you will need to be able to work at least 3 days per week to give sufficient time to complete the NVQ.
There will be posts in various locations throughout Wales. The majority will be based in our main offices in Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Aberystwyth and Llandudno Junction. However there may also be a limited number of opportunities in other locations throughout Wales.

Our Apprenticeships

As an Apprentice you will earn while you train.  You will develop your skills and be a valued member of the team from day one.  It’s a great career choice whether you are leaving school or college, returning to work after starting a family or looking for a new career.

Types of tasks you could be doing

  • Communicating with different customers / organisations / suppliers and dealing with queries; face to face, by e-mail or on the phone
  • Providing support at internal and external meetings and discussions
  • Taking responsibility for electronic filing for yourself and on behalf of the wider team
  • Drafting documents and letters
  • Arrange events and meetings 
  • Managing spreadsheets/databases
  • Processing financial payments
  • Working with other teams within your wider business area as and when required 

At the end of your Apprenticeship, you may have the opportunity for a permanent job with us at the Welsh Government, depending on the availability of posts, successful completion of the Apprenticeship and no issues in terms of performance, conduct or attendance. 


Who are we looking for?

Individuals who are keen to learn, and have the commitment to gain a qualification while also working as part of a team.

You will be:

  • Motivated to study while you work, in order to develop your skills (Behaviour being tested: Commitment to completing an Apprenticeship)
  • A team player (Behaviour being tested: Proactively contribute to the work of the whole team) 
  • Able to work with little supervision (Behaviour being tested:  Work with energy and pace to get the work done)
  • Flexible in your approach (Behaviour being tested: Co-operate with and be open to the possibilities of change and consider ways to implement and adapt to change in own work role)
  • A good communicator (Behaviour being tested:  Verbal and written communication skills)
  • Confident using ICT, and have good digital skills (Behaviour being tested:  ICT and digital skills - tested via an application question and the online WEST assessments)
  • Able to demonstrate a high level of numeracy and literacy skills (Behvaiour being tested: Numeracy and literacy skills - tested via the online WEST assessments)

Who can apply?

To be eligible to apply you:

  • Will be at least 16 years of age by 31 August 2017. 
  • Will not be in full-time education (you can apply while still attending school/college/university but will have finished your studies by the time your apprenticeship starts).
  • Don’t need any specific qualifications.  If you already hold a qualification at NVQ Level 3 or above in Business Administration you are not eligible for this apprenticeship scheme.
  • Will need to meet the Civil Service Nationality requirements to apply.

What is the qualification?

Our selection process

Full details about the process is outlined in our Stage by Stage Information Guidance (PDF, 4 pages).  It’s important you read this before you start your application.  It also contains guidance on writing your application, and outlines the key dates of the process, for which you’ll need to be available.

The process will include:

  • Initial sift
  • Assessment of eligibility to study NVQ
  • Completion of the online WEST (Wales Essential Skills Toolkit) assessments* in numeracy, literacy and digital skills
  • Second sift
  • Interviews.

* These assessments are an essential requirement for entry to the NVQ, and will be administered by our training provider, Acorn.  Acorn will need to check your eligibility for the NVQ before you can access the online assessment. 


As well as completing the online application, IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU COMPLETE THE ACORN APPRENTICESHIP RECOMMENDATION FORM AND ATTACH IT IN YOUR APPLICATION, AS WITHOUT THIS WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE FORWARD YOUR APPLICATON.

Welsh language requirements

We welcome applications for this scheme in either Welsh or in English.

Applications in Welsh will not be treated less favourably than applications in English.

Some of our posts will require Welsh language skills. However for a number of posts Welsh language skills are not required.
