Meetings will be held in Welsh Government premises and will occasionally take place outside of Cardiff.
Members of the Board can claim remuneration of £282 per meeting, in addition to expenses.

Function of body

Established in May 2018 on an initial transition basis, a public appointments process is now taking place to finalise the membership for the longer-term.

The Board will comprise 12 members including a Chair and will provide regular, creative and high-quality advice to the Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Transport to help improve economic development in Wales in line with the priorities and vision set out in the Economic Action Plan.

Role description

    The Welsh Government values good quality, relevant and timely advice from external sources and the Economy and Transport Ministerial Advisory Board (the Board) exists to strengthen that capacity for sound and challenging external advice.

    Board members will undertake the following duties:

    • Provide regular, creative and high-quality advice to the Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Transport to help improve economic development in Wales in line with the priorities and vision set out in the Economic Action Plan.
    • Horizon-scan to highlight areas of future challenge and opportunity, using individual and collective expertise to raise awareness of issues that warrant further attention and therefore helping to shape the Board’s work programme.
    • Respond to requests from the Cabinet Secretary and senior officials for advice, challenge and testing of key issues, policies and proposals as appropriate.
    • Identify best practice and learning from other nations and regions in the UK and internationally; and demonstrate how such examples might be used to inform thinking in Wales.
    • Suggest specific issues which would benefit from short, sharp reviews undertaken by bespoke task and finish groups or additional expertise that the Board may need to co-opt from time to time depending on its work programme.

    Welsh language skills

    The Welsh Government acknowledges the importance of developing and growing bilingual capabilities in public appointments in Wales, and welcomes applications from candidates who demonstrate their capability to work in both English and Welsh.  The following list of language requirements represents an objective assessment by the recruiting body of the Welsh language skills required to undertake the duties of this particular post.

    Candidates will need to demonstrate the following essential criteria:

    • Knowledge of the business and economic environment and the current challenges, future trends, and opportunities at a Wales, UK, and international level.
    • Ability to demonstrate an awareness of international best practice in the field of economic development.
    • A clear understanding and commitment to equality issues and challenging discriminatory practices when appropriate; and
    • A commitment to Nolan’s ‘Seven Principles of Public Life’.

    Welsh Language

    Welsh Language skills are desirable for this post. Two positions on the Board require Welsh Language as an essential skill.

    All candidates should demonstrate a positive awareness and understanding of the importance of the Welsh language in a bilingual Wales with an appreciation of the Welsh Government's policies and strategies for the language.
