Purpose of Post:

Working as part of the destination and place marketing team in Welsh Government this exciting new position will play a pivotal role in building and reinforcing a new identity for Wales that is contemporary, compelling and engaging: a brand that drives Wales forward on a UK and international stage and inspires the people of Wales to create their future with confidence. Through the development and ongoing maintenance of our Wales brand websites and using those platforms to take our nation’s story to a larger and more valuable audience across online channels and, more specifically, to those people who will be living, working, playing and investing in Wales in the future.

Reporting to the Head of Digital and Creative services, the post holder will take overall responsibility for project managing and delivery of the platform elements of the new Wales Digital Gateway project – supporting the Wales destination brand across tourism, business and beyond.  With experience of and a passion for understanding online user experience they will ensure our new websites and brand platforms are developed in line with our brand strategy and deliver best in class user experience. 

Key tasks:

  • Manage the ongoing development and maintenance of our Wales brand websites and ensure they evolve and deliver best in class user experience. Ensure that our websites effectively support search visibility and that any technical issues arising are resolved.
  • Plan and manage the development of new Wales brand websites and the development of additional instances of our existing websites. Develop associated requirements specification to support such projects.
  • Line managing the Platforms and Build Executive and Database Executive ensure they and their direct reports are well motivated and effective. Manage often-changing priorities and ensure they are always clear around what is expected of them.
  • Manage our lead web development agency and ensure the projects they are working on are well delivered and come in on time and on budget.
  • Work effectively with our lead creative and brand agency as well as our lead digital agency.
  • Have a close working relationship with the senior team and lead brand to ensure all elements of the developments are working to support the Wales brand.
  • Work with colleagues in the Content team within the Hub and broader Tourism Marketing team to support content publishing and management. Help ensure resources and workloads are managed across the piece.
  • Manage relationships with businesses, stakeholders and partners as required.
  • Day to day budget management of the web development budget associated with this project.

Development opportunities:

This role is a critical role within the brand marketing team and offers the successful candidate the opportunity to develop their skills and experience in what is an exciting and brand defining project for Wales. One which will depend on delivering excellence in content led digital marketing.

This is a Delivery Manager role as defined in the GDS defined digital, data and technology roles in Government framework (see https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/delivery-manager-skills-they-need/ )   and as such the following skills and competencies apply.

  1. Proven experience in delivering large scale digital projects and a passion for online user experience
  2. Advanced level digital skills including hands on experience with a variety of content management systems – and preferably Drupal
  3. Proven web project management experience in a busy time stressed environment – including excellent communications skills and working with both internal and external stakeholders
