Purpose of Post:

This post reports to the Head of Marketing and Business Development and is responsible for driving income generation streams across the outstanding historic monuments in the care of Cadw, as well as researching and exploiting new commercial opportunities. The post holder will be set ambitious targets from Cadw’s activities with the income being reinvested into the care and protection of the historic environment.

Key tasks:

  • Develop and execute commercial strategies to achieve ambitious income generation targets and improve commercial performance in specific areas such as filming and photography, demonstrating consideration for costs, time and resources required to deliver effectively and proposing realistic targets and income predictions
  • Day-to-day management of income generation streams including admissions pricing, commercial hire, membership, retail and other activities
  • Prepare comprehensive reports on commercial performance analysing commercial performance and proposing and implementing new measures to drive commercial activities and encourage further use of Cadw monuments, recognising both the exciting opportunities, but also the conservation constraints, that are associated with historic sites that also enjoy statutory protection  
  • Monitor expenditure of the commercial revenue budget programme, including reporting on activities and expenditure, identifying opportunities for cost savings, ensuring accurate recording of expenditure and ensuring expenditure is directly related to strategic plans.
  • Lead the team responsible for developing Cadw’s retail offer, including overseeing retail purchasing and category management, to fully exploit the retail opportuity across the estate to maximise commercial revenue
  • Prepare Ministerial advice and briefings to inform of activities and issues, and present options and recommend ways to progress in commercial business areas, based on clearly presented research and analysis
  • Continually analyse performance of commercial operations, working independently and in collaboration with senior management to implement strategies to effectively ensure best use of resources and value for money, and to ensure all commercial activities feed into wider business objectives and in line with ministerial priorities and Cadw’s published conservation principles
  • Manage, coach and develop staff within the team to ensure that day to day operations are delivered effectively
  • Support the Head of Marketing and Business Development to deliver commercial marketing initiatives and activities to ensure maximum commercial benefit is gained from marketing programmes
  • Lead on developing commercial relationships with partner organisations including Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum Wales, the National Trust and others to maximise commercial opportunities and share best practices
  • Develop and maintain excellent understanding of business needs and target audience to ensure that the needs are being met.
  • Lead a team responsible for proactively engaging, building relationships and responding to enquiries from the public, commercial and other organisations on the hire/use of monuments, demonstrating flexibility to meet the third party’s requirments whilst ensuring appropriate consideration for the historic fabric through liaison with colleagues in Cadw’s ancient monuments inspectorate, and liaising with relevant colleagues to ensure commercial usage fits in with planned acitivities including maintenance, conservation and other events
  • Lead on the management and development of Cadw’s travel trade offer, including leading on familiarisation visits, attending travel trade shows, ensuring all activity is aligned with Visit Wales and implementing monitoring and control measures to analyse impact and results and ensuring value for money is achieved
  • Identify commercial opportunities from wider Cadw programmes including Events, Lifelong Learning and Community Archaeology activites
  • Deputise for Head of Marketing and Business Development as required

Development opportunities:

This is a challenging but rewarding post with the post holder being set ambitious financial targets to hit. Leading the Retail and Commercial team the post holder will be responsible for identifying commercial opportunities from wider Cadw programmes including Events, Lifelong Learning and Community Archaeology activities.

2. Evidence of experience of devising and delivering commercial strategies and focused marketing communications campaigns in a private or public sector context

3. Candidates are required  to be MCIPS qualified or be prepared to work towards this – at least CIPS level 5
