Purpose of Post:

You’ll be part of a small, friendly team responsible for undertaking conservation work and cyclical maintenance at some of Wales’ foremost historical monuments, which are looked after by Cadw.  Recent projects have included, Conservation of masonry walls at Denbigh Castle and Flint Castle, lime mortar repointing and consolidation of wall tops.

The work will be varied, covering sites across North Wales, but mainly around North-East Wales/Mid Wales, which means you may be working in different environments from day to day, which you’ll be able to adapt to, ensuring safe practice at all times.

Your working day will be from 8.00am until 4.00pm Monday-Thursday and 8.00am until 3.30pm on Friday. There is a mid morning break and half and hour for lunch. You’ll need to be able to travel independently to reach your place of work on time.

Key tasks:

    • Specialist conservation techniques working with lime
    • Miscellaneous building works associated with the maintenance and preservation of historic monuments;
    • Prepare, agree (with your line manager) and maintain a ‘Performance Management’ plan.
    • Occasionally covering the duties of other grades (if qualified to do so);
    • Drive and be responsible for works vehicle, as and when instructed.
    • Any other reasonable duties, as requested by your line manager (which may include works of a non-craft nature)

    Development opportunities:

    You will have opportunities to develop your career through a development plan agreed with your line manager, which could include lime working in Historic Buildings, Dry Stone Walling as well as ensuring you keep up to date with mandatory Health and Safety training.

    Job Specific Criteria:


    1. A sound practical and theoretical knowledge of masonry techniques, supported by a recognised relevant craft qualification, or served a full apprenticeship or other relevant training scheme. Experience of proven masonry in the work place.

    2. Good overall practical and working knowledge of building construction and a good understanding of current construction Health and Safety issues.

    3. Ability to work at considerable heights from properly constructed scaffold, at times in unfavourable weather conditions.
