Background

Led by our Chief Digital Officer, the Welsh Government is increasingly delivering more services online. The Chief Digital Officer provides a consultancy service of digital and data expertise across Welsh Government.

SHELL are responsible for overseeing higher education, further education and the wider post-16 education, training and skills sector in Wales along with the funding of approved vocational qualifications and  the development of employability policy.  They are also responsible for leading the contribution that the post-16 education and training system makes to developing highly educated and skilled people who are able to gain and retain high quality jobs that pay well and make a contribution to the wider Welsh economy and society.

 

The Role

As a Senior DevOps Manager you will be expected to transform technical requirements into effective systems, integrating and building software systems to enable product delivery. 

You will be expected to have deep technical knowledge and make sure strategies for products are repeatable, scalable and highly available.  You must provide support to delivery teams and assist with solving complex problems and be responsible for planning and designing large groups of stories.

You will provide robust, evidence based assurance to Management in relation to the digital systems underpinning large and complex products, while maintaining a high level of client service throughout.

You will be knowledgeable with all aspects of the delivery lifecycle from concept and design through to installation, testing and maintenance of the suite of products and services to ensure a continuous provision of services are delivered.

Key tasks:

  • Identify and explore opportunities for service and business improvements which meet the business needs
  • Prioritise system design by levels of risk and complexity.
  • Review the system design of the team others to ensure appropriate technology, efficient use of resource and integration of multiple systems and technology.
  • Manage the Request Management Service (RMS) which allows stakeholders an interface with the team to request, log and track work packages.
  • Ensure resources are appropriately allocated to meet key deadlines.
  • Analyse, identify, prioritise and implement improvements and efficiencies and produce recommendations to the senior staff
  • Create and design workable prototypes, programs and physical outputs, understanding parameters, restrictions . 
  • Define the integration build and co-ordinating build activities across systems, lead on  integration testing activities.
  • Manage the process to ensure information security, design solutions and services with security controls embedded specifically engineered as mitigation against security threats as a core part of the solutions and services.
  • Research and architect solutions to solve security and compliance  adhering to Welsh Government standards.
  • Be responsible for own learning and keep CPD up to date.

Job specific criteria

  • Degree level qualification in computing or a related subject, or equivalent practical experience, knowledge and expertise. 
  • Experience, using automated tooling, of building and configuring new server/system platforms. Experience in pro-actively managing the platform to ensure and maintain scalability, resilience and high availability.  Vast experience of testing, debugging and troubleshooting platform/system problems. Ability to draw together and present reasonable conclusions from a wide range of incomplete, complex evidence and data to make recommendations.
  • Experience of maintains the security, confidentiality and integrity of information systems through compliance with relevant legislation and regulations. Designs, implements and operates controls and management strategies to allow this.
