Purpose of Post:

Working within the Marine Evidence and Technology Branch, this role will require you to:

  • provide scientific advice and support to Ministers, often in politically sensitive areas, with a particular focus on fisheries in relation to EU-exit
  • work with UK and international marine science bodies, in the post EU exit context, to highlight Welsh evidence needs
  • ensure continuous improvement in the quality of evidence
  • enable the use of science in policy development.

Key tasks:

Working within the Marine Evidence and Technology Branch, while always maintaining close links with policy colleagues, you will be responsible for:

  • designing our fisheries science and monitoring plans to deliver against international obligations and to provide the Welsh Government with robust evidence for negotiations, including around EU-exit
  • providing fisheries science advice to policy officials and Ministers in coastal state and regional fisheries management organisation negotiations
  • working with Defra and the other Devolved Administrations on the recalculation of fisheries opportunities, triggered by EU-exit, using different mechanisms including zonal attachment
  • representing the Welsh Government in UK engagement with the International Council for Exploration of the Seas (ICES)
  • leading and co-ordinating Welsh Government involvement with the UK Marine Science Co-ordination Committee (MSCC) and sub-groups
  • improving the co-ordination and use of marine scientific research and evidence across the Welsh Government including in policy development and implementation
  • working with the Senior Marine and Fisheries Science Manager to build a vibrant Wales marine and fisheries evidence network including the most relevant experts from academia, government, industry and NGOs
  • raising the profile of the Marine and Fisheries Division with UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the research councils and leveraging future research spend to meet marine evidence needs

Development opportunities:

This is a high profile role to represent the Welsh Government on UK networks including the MSCC, and internationally including with ICES, to ensure that Wales’ marine science evidence requirements and views are taken account of.

  • A track record in marine science with strong knowledge and experience in fisheries science
