Purpose of Post:

The Inspector of Ancient Monuments is responsible for providing a range of statutory duties relating to conserving, sustaining, protecting and understanding the historic environment of Wales, and in particular the conservation and protection of designated (scheduled) ancient monuments and other archaeological assets.

The Inspector of Ancient Monuments has pan Wales responsibility for selecting monuments of national importance for designation (scheduling) under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 and also regional responsibility for casework affecting scheduled ancient monuments in North East Wales (Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham).

Key tasks:

  • To inspect, assess and make recommendations for scheduling monuments, archaeological sites and buildings of historic interest of all periods throughout Wales
  • To provide specialist archaeological advice on scheduled monument consents, ancient monument grant applications and other casework affecting scheduled monuments
  • To develop and support projects to improve the condition and promote public appreciation and understanding of the historic environment and individual historic assets
  • To provide specialist archaeological advice on damage cases affecting scheduled monuments
  • To manage the work of regional field monument wardens
  • To represent Cadw and provide specialist heritage management and historic environment advice at regional forums and other conservation focussed groups
  • To assist one of the senior Inspectors of Ancient Monuments in the monitoring of work undertaken by the Welsh Archaeological Trusts including leading thematic projects
  • To work on projects to conserve and interpret the public monuments in Cadw’s care, and to enhance their accessibility
  • To assist with briefings for Ministers and/or senior officers on subject responsibilities, including verbal briefings or attendance at meetings, and contribute written advice for Cadw briefing commissions.

Development opportunities:

The post holder will join Cadw’s archaeological inspectorate team, and will be encouraged to participate in a range of internal and external training opportunities.  Continuing professional development is supported, including academic qualifications and participation in training provided by the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA).

There will be opportunities for the postholder to participate in and lead projects related to monument conservation and community archaeology working with partners including Local Authorities, National Parks and other heritage organisations.

Key tasks

1.    A good honours degree in archaeology or other relevant subject.  A relevant post-graduate qualification is also desirable.

2.    Good general knowledge of the archaeology of sites and monuments of every period from the earliest time.  Specific knowledge of the archaeology and history of Wales is desirable.

3.    Experience in archaeological fieldwork and the practical management of archaeological sites and historic monuments at level equivalent to Associate Member of Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (ACIfA).
